MARVIC starts its last year with a team meeting in Helsinki

Throughout the last three years, MARVIC has significantly contributed to strengthening the scientific and technical foundation for robust Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems across Europe, supporting not only research but also the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation policy development and providing valuable knowledge for the whole carbon farming ecosystem.

With only one year left to go before the end of the project, the MARVIC team gathered to discuss the progress over the last 12 months and the questions and challenges that still lie ahead. The meeting, which convened more than 40 partners, took place in Helsinki from May 5 to 7, 2026, and was organised by representatives from the Finnish Meteorological Institute with support from ILVO, the project coordinator.

Through presentations and workshops, MARVIC experts explored especially the next steps towards the project’s MRV framework, which is now in its final stages. The goal of this framework is to provide recommendations to democratise MRV in carbon farming by enabling its large-scale deployment, scalability, and cost reduction by making its technical foundations as much accessible to all as possible. In addition, the team addressed challenges related to quantification approaches and to the cost-accuracy of MRV, as well as the progress in the 27 test cases across 12 countries and four land uses and soil types (LUSTs).

MARVIC’s last year promises to deliver a wide array of resources and results, with several scientific articles, webinars, reports and policy briefs on their way. These materials will be available on the project’s study, where many already produced reports and videos can be accessed.
