MARVIC launches an online Glossary to support a shared understanding of carbon farming

As carbon farming continues to evolve, establishing a shared vocabulary is essential for effective communication among researchers, policymakers, farmers and other stakeholders. Terms can have different meanings across disciplines, while different expressions are sometimes used to describe the same concept.

To address this challenge, MARVIC has launched a new onlineGlossary, providing a common reference for key terms and concepts related to carbon farming and Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV).

Developed collaboratively by the MARVIC consortium under the leadership of Agrosolutions, the Glossary builds on a review of existing literature and official definitions, complemented by discussions among project partners to clarify terminology where agreed definitions were unavailable. The resource brings together terms covering carbon farming certification, sampling and statistics, modelling frameworks, climate metrics, and socio-economic and policy aspects.

The new website section makes this knowledge easier to explore, allowing visitors to browse terms alphabetically or filter them by thematic category. Each entry provides a definition and its corresponding source, helping users navigate the technical language of carbon farming and understand how key concepts are used.

The glossary is conceived as a living resource, which will continue to evolve as carbon farming knowledge, methodologies and regulatory frameworks develop. Contributions and suggestions from the wider community are welcome to help improve and expand its content. Explore the MARVIC Glossary and consult the full publication behind it.
