MARVIC will showcase new tools and results at the European Mission Soil Week 2026

MARVIC will participate in the European Mission Soil Week 2026, taking place in Dublin, Ireland, on 17–18 November, where project representatives Greet Ruysschaert, Fenny van Egmond and Pien Stijn will present two key results aimed at improving the monitoring and assessment of carbon farming practices across Europe.

One of the project’s main outputs, MARVIC partners will showcase an interactive web-based Smart Soil Sampling Tool to help design soil sampling campaigns tailored to different carbon farming projects’ objectives and needs. The tool uses decision trees adapted to diverse agricultural systems, including arable land, grasslands, managed peatlands and agroforestry, and to different project stages such as initialisation, verification and measure/remeasure efforts. Field campaigns conducted in Italy and Belgium have supported its development by exploring the trade-offs between sampling costs, accuracy and uncertainty.

In addition, MARVIC experts will present European-scale high-resolution maps of carbon farming mitigation potential, covering changes in crop rotations, organic amendments, crop residue management, cover crops, reduced or zero tillage, conversion to permanent grassland, agroforestry and raising water tables in managed peatlands. The maps have been validated through workshops involving national experts, providing valuable insights into the potential contribution of different practices to climate change mitigation across European agricultural landscapes.

MARVIC’s participation in the European Mission Soil Week offers an opportunity to share these results with the wider soil community and demonstrate how the project’s research is being translated into practical tools and knowledge to support robust, context-specific Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems for carbon farming. Both results are currently in the final stages of development and will be made publicly available soon.

The fourth edition of the European Mission Soil Week, hosted by Teagasc and the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU, will bring together policymakers, researchers, farmers, land managers, businesses and other stakeholders to exchange knowledge and explore solutions for sustainable soil management. Through thematic sessions, exhibitions and networking opportunities, the event will foster collaboration and support the implementation of the EU Mission Soil.
